An Online Disconnect from the Real World

Canva: Starting off the assignment I felt overwhelmed with the immense amount of work and had concerns that the final product may not be up to my standards. Eager to work with the new software, I started with a template but soon ran into problems. This software was not able to maintain its quick speed with all the data on the infographic. This meant that I was limited to having very minimal amounts of graphics and statistics.

In terms of design, I coordinated the fonts, colors, and shapes in the whole demographic to create a more appealing look. As for the fonts, I made sure to have the most important information at a larger scale with clear and legible fonts. The sleek fonts create a sense of innovation precluding the idea that the topic is of modern culture. The colors I used are cooler accent colors to make the text apparent and pop out.

For shapes and images, I created my own diagram of iPhones connected by lines to show how everyone is part of and exposed to the media regardless if they contribute or not. I used the symbols of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, signifying the platforms of social media my issue exists in and to what extent.

Besides formatting the infographic to my likings, I found the hardest part to be gathering statistics relevant to my topic. Many sources made strong points but failed to provide numerical information which I could implement into a graph. As well, finding accurate data became a challenge with the constantly evolving Internet and its social media. Half of my sources claimed that social media improved social interaction in real life and online while others mentioned the degrading downfall of human interaction to social media. Displaying this data was also difficult without the proper editing tools to change numerical graphs. Canva lacks the ability to articulate my statistics preventing me from expressing my ideas. Although the program can be useful and present data in an appealing manner, showing the correct data is still one flaw with the right adjustments, can give Canva so much more potential.

The design and intentions of this program are both remarkable in their own ways providing editors with aesthetic ability. That being said, it is only for users who are looking for the aesthetic look. If not used together with a program that focuses on presenting data. Utilizing it without can only get you the results I've explained above.
