Module 10 Part 2
My first semester of academic experience at Poly was at times exasperating but also very pleasing. From the past two quarters I was able to fully immerse myself with the curriculum and find certain techniques and strategies that worked and still work to my advantage.
As a person who enjoys school but simply cannot go through a complete hour without a break, I have learned to compensate for my need to take a break from learning. Which consequently, is one of the many study skills I had come across; Taking breaks with a long study session is vital to staying focused and on task. However this is not advocating studying for a tremendous amount of time nor vise versa. This proved to be effective for me on homework assignments and projects that took longer periods of time to complete and also improved my ability to manage time more wisely with other extracurriculars.
The assignment I am most proud of from the first semester is the Twilight Monologue project. For this project we had to have a formal interview with a witness from the Los Angeles Riots and transcribe their experiences verbatim. From their words, we needed to portray their ideas and perspective of the LA riots by only keeping key monologues from the full transcript. I enjoyed creating this monologue because of having opportunity to hear Dr. Farrar, my interviewee, and his experience with racial profiling. I was proud of myself for creating a monologue out of his words and much more, one he approved of when we presented them to him.
One project that did not achieve the result I intended or strived for was my original fairytale. I spent a tremendous amount of effort and time creating and cultivating how my story would turn out. However, I received a grade lower than expected and didn’t get the feeling of satisfaction when she corrected the writing. This was because I expressed my ideas but not in a clear enough way for the reader to fully understand. Aside from that, having a habit of wordiness is not beneficial in my current English class. My teacher prefers to be more concise and being able to express ideas and opinions with the least amount of words possible.
As of this point in time, I feel like I have learned a minimal amount of things that are useful in this class. The only assignments I feel were beneficial to my curriculum at Poly were the Voicethread assignments and the study plan. Having past experience in Voicethread helped with past English assignments which I otherwise would find difficulty in. The study plan helped for the sole purpose of finals but nothing more. Other than that, I feel like this class has brought a substantial amount of work but is limited to teaching me certain aspects of writing that I would use elsewhere.
My goal for the second semester of school is to pass all my classes and to manage my time more wisely in doing so. I wish to get rid of my preconception that wordiness is a positive thing in writing. Besides that, my other goals are to work on having an equal balance between sports and academics since the homework load feels a bit heavy sometimes. This would prove to be a valuable skill for high school since I practice a sport that is played year round. But most of all to focus on the quality of the work and not how fast I am able to complete it.
